Life Instructs When Plans Fail
You tend to learn more from negative experiences. But you must look for the positive in every negative.
“My mother taught me that the universe guides, teaches, and offers up gifts... even when bad things happen.” — John Wozniak
I haven’t eaten in over two days.
And all I can think about is food. What I wouldn’t give right now for a big, juicy burger; a pizza smothered in cheese; a double-sized portion of mouth-watering lasagna. My body craves the heartiest of meals, but I cannot allow it.
The first day was in preparation for a medical procedure. I did what was asked of me. I showed up. They couldn’t find a vein for the IV... twice. Ugh! I went under. I woke up. And I heard these words from the doctor:
“We had to abort the procedure. Did you follow the preparation instructions?”
My answer: “Yes, I followed them exactly.”
“This happens sometimes. Sorry about that, but we'll need to do it again.”
My first thought... so much for that big meal I was craving. And I must do the preparation again, which is much worse than the actual procedure. I’m through it now and ready to go. That meal I’m dreaming of awaits on the other side of the procedure.
This little mishap has me thinking about the unpredictability of life. Things often go sideways. We are forced to endure pain, discomfort and everything in between. What we take for granted is now out of reach.
I could be angry at my misfortune. But I choose to see the positive in this unplanned outcome. I am grateful for...
Family: They care for me when I am in need.
Food: A small piece of bread would be heaven right now.
Medicine: This procedure detects problems while they are easy to treat.
My Work: I miss my creative work and sharing it with others.
When Life upends even the smallest of plans, you will react with anger and disappointment. Let it blow through you. Then focus intently on the lessons it teaches.
My lesson is gratitude.
What is yours?
🤔 Food for Thought:
Are you seeing the good in plans gone awry?
Do you learn more from positive or negative outcomes?
⚙️ One Small Step:
The next time a plan goes sideways, get through it. When the negative emotions are done raging through you, immediately seek the good in the experience. What did you learn?
Wishing you a smooth procedure, Coach! Admire your self discipline and mental strength. It is indeed tough to reframe toward gratitude and a wider perspective at times. Appreciate seeing it in action! 🙏🏼
